Tony teachs the traditional Appalachian folk song "Shady Grove," common in the repertoire of Bluegrass and old-time musicians of the Cumberlands. This variation of the tune Tony has made uses a modal theme.
("Shady Grove")…- Hello folks, there is Shady Grove.…The modal Shady Grove, as I like to call it.…Someone had a question about the…kind of a minorish sounding Shady Grove…on the site a while back,…and I believe that they meant this kind of a Shady Grove,…and it works perfectly in this tuning,…where you take,…I'm gonna get back to G tuning.…
All you do is…you take the second string up a half step…to C…what this does…Do Re Mi…There's the third note of the scale.…Do Re Mi…And that determines if something's major or minor.…If you tune it down a half step…There's a G minor chord.…Because that third note of the scale…determines whether something's major or minor.…There's the major back to regular G tuning…for the B note on the second string.…Now if you take it up to C…now you've got the fourth note of the scale…on the second string.…
Do Re Mi Fa…One two three four…There no longer is a third degree of the scale…in this tuning.…So it becomes very ambiguous whether it's major or minor,…but it kinda has that bluesy,…lonesome minor-y sound,…
