- Alright so let's move on to tablature. And tablature has been around for centuries. Everybody used to use this with the lute, which is the instrument that sort of proceeded the guitar, but it's a very simple way to read music. It just shows lines that represent strings and then numbers on those lines to represent the frets that you play on those strings. So let's go through this in more detail. Notice you'll also see the fingerings here below the diagram. So, we'll start out with the first one. You see that the thickest string is at the bottom. The thinnest string is at the top. Okay, so if you need to move your guitar and look at it from another angle that might help, but let's play the first note. This is the first string, fifth fret with your first finger.
