Tony teaches the most efficient and productive way to become a better banjo player and get the most out of your time learning. Discussed are what and how to practice as well as ways to break through plateus in your development as a banjo player.
- [Man] Another thing I've been doing recently…(tuning banjo)…which you can do in this first quarter if you care to,…is in addition to working with the metronome,…you can be working with funk bands, F-U-N-K,…and these are bands who were playing…in the early 70s and beyond,…groups like Earth, Wind, and Fire, Tower of Power,…Chaka Khan and Rufus, the Ohio Players,…et cetera, et cetera.…This really funky kind of sound,…and I was working with this bluegrass band…that had a couple people from the Philadelphia Orchestra…in it some years ago,…and the tympanist, who was a wonderful timekeeper,…he was playing drums in this particular group,…and I said, "So what do you do when you're…"working on your time? What do you do?"…And I expected he worked with a metronome or something.…
He said, "Oh, I practice along with Earth, Wind, and Fire."…I went, "What?"…'Cause he's this classical tympanist,…but he thought their timing was so good,…which it is, it's ridiculous,…that it was a really great way to practice,…and I tried it for a little while…
