When people aren't getting your song's message, it helps to remember not to assume they know anything about your song—says music producer and songwriter, Cliff Goldmacher.
- [Instructor] Another songwriting craft issue…has to do with the fact that people…might not be getting your song's message…as they're listening to your song.…There are a couple of things to think about…when it comes to this.…First of all, and this is a big one…and one you need to remind yourself of…quite a bit early on in your process…is don't assume that people know…what's going on in your head.…You really do need to assume that nobody knows anything…until that song starts to play and they're listening to it.…
Because you may already have the story…worked out in your head or this may be something…near and dear to you that you've been…thinking about for years, the risk is that you assume that…people are up to speed with you…before you even begin your song,…and that is not the case.…The assumption should always be…your listener knows nothing other than…what you ultimately tell them in your song.…Now, something that you can do…to also help people connect to your story…is to use images and metaphor.…
And I should stop and define metaphor for you…
