It's better to start small

- [Instructor] When it comes to recording your demo, my experience has told me that it is always better to start small. Meaning, a scaled-down demo is really a good place to start. While a fully produced professional demo will sound great, it's expensive. And on top of that, it's often unnecessary, as your primary goal is to put your song's melody and lyric in the best possible light. Adding drums and bass to your demo might make it sound more exciting, but that usually means that you'll also need to add additional instruments, like electric guitars, keyboards, and then, depending on the genre, additional instruments beyond that, like pedal steel if it's country. You get the drift. One of the things that I have found that really works even on scaled-down demos is harmony vocals, because harmony vocals make a demo sound bigger than it is.
