- All right, now for harmony and chords. We've already talked about several areas of music theory, now, for harmony and chords. You know, chords are basically three or more notes, which are built off of the intervals that we've already checked out. Let's delve into this a little bit further. This is a C major scale that has been harmonized. This means that thirds have been stacked above each note of the scale to form triads. The harmony notes are all within the scale. No sharps or flats have been added or changed. This is called diatonic harmony, or harmony within the key. You will find three types of triads, major, minor, and diminished. The harmonized C major scale results in the following chords: C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor, B diminished. When you're looking at them in the key, the one chord is always major.
