Hammer-ons and pull-offs

- All right, now for one of my favorite subjects and that is hammer-ons and pull-offs. Often in music you'll see something that looks kind of like a tie, but it's actually a slur and that means that you basically have a legato feel or as smooth as possible move from one note to the next and this is done with hammer-ons and pull-offs. Now, the way that you can tell the difference between a tie and a slur is that a tie connects the same note. A slur is from either a lower note to a higher note or a higher note to a lower note. Let's look at just hammer-ons. So in playing a hammer-on, you basically slap down your finger onto the fret board with a string in between your finger and the fret board. So if you bring your hand over to the face of the guitar. (tapping) You kind of really have to hit it pretty hard in order to get a loud percussive tone.
