- Okay, let's talk about this a little bit. (banjo plucking) That's a very standard Scruggs intro if you have a melody note on the third string. (banjo plucking) And even though you don't go right to the third string you slide into that G note, (banjo plucking) and then hit it for the second position in the measure. (banjo plucking) Right there on that D lick, I'm using a Don Reno roll because it feels like the thing to do there. Two forward rolls, (banjo plucking) you're playing a D seventh, lift off the middle, (banjo plucking) bring the middle down. (banjo plucking) Then I'm playing a C with an open first string, a really pretty sound. (banjo plucking) And then I have the middle on the second fret of the third string. (banjo plucking) And as you're doing that, even though that note is right there and you can just keep it down, (banjo plucking) I want the separation of notes.
