Tony will teach you the iconic Earl Scruggs roll pattern made legendary in the tune Foggy Mountain Breakdown. For Scruggs style Bluegrass banjo players, this is an absolutely essential roll pattern for your toolbox.
- [Instructor] I'd like to talk to you now about…the Foggy Mountain Breakdown roll, which is a…hugely important roll in Bluegrass banjo playing…because Earl Scruggs came up with it.…(strums banjo)…And I will just play a little bit of Foggy Mountain…Breakdown just to get into the mood.…(plays Foggy Mountain Breakdown on banjo)…(plays Foggy Mountain Breakdown on banjo)…And the trick to the Foggy Mountain Breakdown roll…is bringing the thumb across to the second string,…and I'll talk to you about that in a moment,…but let's just start with this.…
We're starting with two to three hammer on…the second string.…(plucks banjo strings)…And let's do that about eight times.…You're going to take your index…(plucks banjo string)…on the second part of the second string,…pick the second string with the index finger.…(plucks banjo string)…Then you'll hammer on to the middle finger.…(plucks banjo strings repeatedly)…If you do it too many times you'll alienate…everyone around you, and do this with a metronome.…(plucks banjo strings repeatedly)…
