- Yes, let's move on to Barre Chords now. This is definitely one of the big changes from a beginning guitarist into that intermediate level guitar player when they can really start to get down barre chords. So let's start and cover how to play a barre chord. First of all, you have to flatten out your index finger and really have a lot of thumb pressure, and then you're gonna form the chord on the other side of your index finger. So first I suggest you just really try to get the barre happening. For instance, if you're gonna try to barre across all six strings at the first fret, first just try the thinnest two strings. (guitar strums) And flatten out your finger, so it's totally parallel with the fret, and then try three strings, then try four, then try five, and now you have all six. Make sure they all sound clean, you're not getting any dead notes. And also you can sort of use the side of your index finger and dig that knuckle here into the strings.
