Banks of the Ohio is a 19th-century murder ballad, written by unknown authors. It's become a Bluegrass standard and is commonly heard in jam circles. Tony will teach you even more variations by working with the 6th note of the scale on the up the neck version of the tune in this lesson.
- Now I'm going to show you how you can get…an up the neck break for "Banks of the Ohio"…using sixths, the interval of sixths.…(banjo playing intervals)…I'll play this through and then dissect it,…and just tell you what I'm doing with the sixths…and how I'm getting the melody using the sixths.…("Banks of the Ohio")…There's one little, (banjo playing)…there's a little fancy thing there,…but I just like that kind of sound.…
But let's start from the beginning.…(banjo playing)…So I'm using middle and pinky here…for the four and the five, (banjo playing)…and then index and pinky, and I'm using mostly…index and pinky to get the sixths.…And the melody's all in the first string, if you just look…at the first string, you'll find the melody there.…♫ And only say that you'll by mine…♫ And in no others' hearts entwine…♫ Down beside where the waters flow…♫ Down by the banks of the Ohio…It's, with the exception of maybe one note,…the melody's all there on the first string.…
So, let's start from here. First measure,…now I'm sliding five to seven on the third string…
