Banks of the Ohio is a 19th-century murder ballad, written by unknown authors. It's become a Bluegrass standard and is commonly heard in jam circles. Tony will teach you a versitile down the neck version of the tune in this lesson.
- Here's a great, old folk song, "Banks of the Ohio."…I'm sure Pete Seeger has done this,…The Greenbriar Boys did this with Joan Baez…very early on on a Vanguard recording.…And it's just one of those tunes…that's always been out there.…And now it's on the site.…So, here's "Banks of the Ohio."…("Banks of the Ohio" on banjo)…Very straight ahead version,…just try to get the syllables of the song.…
(banjo plucking)…So you have just the three note lead in,…like one-and-two-and-one-and-two-and-one,…and you're into the tune.…So, you're sliding two to three on the third string…into a forward roll.…(banjo plucking)…Another forward roll, another forward roll.…Three forward rolls. (banjo plucking)…Into a pinch on the first and third strings,…this is towards the beginning of measure three.…(banjo plucking) Measure two and three,…quarter note, ring on the forth fret of the forth.…
And then thumb and middle pinching…the first and third strings, now you're on the D7th chord.…(banjo plucking)…Forward, backward roll.…(banjo plucking)…
