The importance of your website
A question that often comes up for independent musicians today is, do I still need to have a website? With the popularity of sites like Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, not to mention the services we covered like Bandcamp or ReverbNation and Topspin, do you really need to put the time or energy into your own website when you can already have detailed profile pages, information and music posted on these other sites? Opinions vary but I am still firmly on the side of yes you do. Your own website is the one place where you can control 100% of the content. We use tools like Facebook and Twitter because that's where your fans and potential fans are, but with Facebook you're subject to the whims of whatever updates they make to the site and you frequently have to adapt to any changes they implement, sometimes with no notice. You also can't customize the look of your Facebook page beyond your profile and cover photos. Twitter is famous for only allowing 140 characters per post so, while it's a…
