Writing from a melodic idea

- When you're thinking about writing from a melody, it's important to remember that beautiful, catchy melodies are a really rare commodity and you absolutely have to honor them. What I mean by that is honor that melody and build your song around it. A good melody is, first of all, the first thing that a listener's gonna hear way, way before they actually listen to your lyrics and listen to what the song is about. Now something to keep in mind is don't let that melody, that beautiful melody, box in your lyric. What I mean by that is a melody, no matter how beautiful, shouldn't force you into choosing awkward words or watered-down phrases, or heaven help you, cliches. A beautiful, memorable melody is a hugely important part of the song, but it is not the only part of the song. So I'm here to warn you not to compromise on your lyrical integrity.
