Why register?
- If copyright registration isn't necessary to get a copyright, why do so many song owners do it? It's because registration provides two important benefits. First, registration tells the world you've staked a claim to the song and it enables someone who may wanna use your song to contact you. After you register, your song is indexed in the Copyright Office's records. The online public catalog record is located at cocatalog.loc.gov. The public can find the song by title and by songwriter. In this way, the copyright office functions like a county recorder's office, a central repository for owners to record titles. Note, although the song content is protected by copyright, titles are not protected. Second, if you run into a dispute over your song, registration provides a strategic bonus, provided that you timely register.
