Who is Harry Fox?
In song writing circles you may have heard the name Harry Fox. And while the name Harry Fox Agency might sound like some sort of fictional spy agency, I assure you it is very real. The Harry Fox Agency is the foremost mechanical licensing organization for music publishers in the United States. This means that they license mechanical and digital use of music including use on CDs, digital services, records, tapes, and so on. Like PROs or SoundExchange, the Harry Fox Agency covers a very specific segment of the song writing royalty business. Whereas PROs like ASCAP and BMI cover performance royalties for usage in things like radio broadcast, and SoundExchange tracks royalties for music used in digital media for recording artists, the Harry Fox Agency represents music publishers for their mechanical and digital licensing needs.
