Welcome

- Hi, I'm Garrick Chow and welcome to Getting Started in the Business of Songwriting. If you're a songwriter who's serious about your work and your goals include making money by selling your music or by earning royalties or licensing fees, there's a lot you need to know. My goal in this course is to put all the most important information together in one place. I'll start off in the first chapter by discussing copyright and understanding who owns a song. From there, we'll look at performance rights organizations and how to register your songs, to make sure you receive royalties when they're played or performed in public. I'll discuss what a music publisher is and the publisher's role in pitching and promoting your music. And I'll explain the differences between mechanical, master, and sync licensing of your music. In the second half of the course, we'll get into the topic of being a do-it-yourself musician. I'll discuss how to find and sign up with companies who specialize in distribution and marketing for independent songwriters. I'll talk about options for selling physical copies of your music online and at your shows. And we'll look at ways to interact with and build your fan base through a website, social media, and mailing lists. We'll be covering these topics and a whole lot more so, let's jump into Getting Started in the Business of Songwriting.
