How do song copyrights earn money?

- Throughout this course, I provide a few examples of songs that have earned a great deal of money. But you're probably aware of the reality, most songwriters have a hard time making ends meet. Digital file sharing, more than 90% of downloaded music is illegal, and rock-bottom payments to songwriters for streaming audio from services like Spotify and Pandora have diminished songwriting revenue. Record labels are taking their cut too, paying reduced royalties and seeking co-ownership of song copyrights. Although songwriters face a leaner future, the songwriting goose is still laying many golden eggs. Large entities like record companies, television networks, performance rights organizations, and video game makers are still paying substantial fees to the songwriter.
