- Next, you're going to provide information about the songwriters, or authors, as the Copyright Office refers to them. If you're not sure who qualifies as a songwriter you can sort that out by reviewing the video on co-writers. You will see a button entitled Add Me. Assuming you're a songwriter, click the Add Me button and your name will populate the next screen. You are also offered a chance to name an organization as an author. That would only be the case if your song is considered a work made for hire. For example, a company paid you to write the song. For more information on works made for hire, review the earlier video on who owns a song or review Copyright Circular 9. If it is not a work made for hire, which is most likely the case, answer No to the question, "Is this author's contribution a work made for hire?" By the way, if all the members of a band wrote a song, don't list the band as the author in the Organization box. Instead, list each band member separately. Choose your…
