- Generally, a Copyright Office registration specialist only contacts an applicant if the filing or deposit materials don't comply with Copyright Office rules. That's usually because insufficient or inconsistent information is furnished. For example, the songwriter's name is spelled two different ways or the applicant failed to indicate a co-writer's contribution. Most of these errors can be easily corrected and are less likely to occur with electronic applications in which completion of form fields is mandatory. If you file electronically, you can, to a limited extent, track the status of your application. If you sign into the eCO system and return to your dashboard, you will see a section entitled Open Cases. Find the case for your recent application and click the hyperlink. That should indicate the claim status as pending.
