Join Ryan Hewitt for an in-depth discussion in this video Punching-in to polish the performance, part of Advanced Drum Recording Session with Josh Freese.
- My only confession is during that snare drum roll…right before the last chorus I hit a lazy mistake.…During the...…(drum roll)…That's the only, other than that,…everything sounded great in here.…- It felt really great, can we…drop in that drum roll part?…- Yes.…- Because the last take, the snare mic was all wonky.…- Only if we tell everyone this was…one take with no punches.…- Of course.…- Cause no one's going to see this, right?…- Of course.…- Ok, cool. - No one will ever notice.…- Awesome.…- Alright, here we go.…Drop in on the bridge, I'll give you four bars?…- Great.…
I'll play along just so the cymbals…ringing overhead and stuff.…- Yep, so here's four bars.…- Great.…(rock music)…- When you're doing drop-ins on a drum track,…you gotta make sure the drummer's playing…exactly the same way as he was on the…take that you're punching into.…Cymbals have to be ringing the same way,…drums have to be ringing the same way,…compressors have to be kicking the same way.…And that way, when you make the edit it will be seamless.…
