Join Todd Perkins for an in-depth discussion in this video Creating a watch project, part of Building a Calculator for Apple Watch.
- You can create a watch project just like any other project in Xcode. From the Welcome screen, I'll click Create a new Xcode project, and under watchOS, I'll click Application, and choose iOS App with WatchKit App. Note that WatchKit Apps are companion apps to iOS apps, so you'll have to design both applications. And at this time you could not submit a WatchKit App by itself. So I'll click Next. And for Product Name, I'm going to type Example. I'll leave the setting to the default, in addition to clicking Include Glance Scene, and Include Complication, and then I'll click next.
Now I want to save the application just on my Desktop, so I'll click Desktop, and then click Create. Now when you look inside of your project in the project navigator, you're going to see several different groups. So first is the Example group, which is the base name of my project. This group represents my iOS application. Then I have the WatchKit App group, and the WatchKit Extension group. We'll talk about where to write your code, and how that code works in another movie.
For now, just know that when you create your watch project, it's just like any other project. You just choose to create the watch project. Then you have several different settings that you can choose when you create the project, and you have different visual interfaces that are organized in the various groups inside of the project navigator.
