Operating systems and virtual machines
- The operating system, or OS, is a special software program that acts like a brain for your computer. It tells the hardware what to do and how to act based on inputs and outputs from the software programs installed on your machine. Hardware are all the physical things in your computer that you touch and hold, hard drives, RAM, your computer screen, and your smartphone are all examples of hardware. Software are all the programs and instructions that tell your computer what to do. You interact with software every time you use a computer or mobile device. The OS sits between the hardware and the software, directing traffic, managing resources and giving you as a user, a way to interact with the machine and save changes. The three most common types of operating systems for computers and servers are Microsoft Windows, macOS, and the Unix-based family of Linux and BSD distributions.
