When to use the transitions framework: Android App Development: Animations and Transitions

Android’s Transitions Framework is a set of tools for animating changes between different views using a combination of XML and Java code. It was introduced in Android 4.4, KitKat, and only works in that and later versions of the operating system. As of the time this course was recorded, there wasn’t any compatible version of the framework for older versions, so in order to use it in your app you’ll need to set your app’s minimum SDK to API 19. There currently isn’t an official backward-compatible version of this framework, in the support repository. But as of the time of this recording, in May 2016, devices running on KitKat and later comprised about 75% of the device market accessing the Google Play store, and that number should improve significantly over time.
