- [Linton] On modern Android, material design is a required visual language that makes our apps look consistent and feel engaging. However, building material design apps can be challenging at times because it requires a lot of attention to detail. This is even more of an issue if we try to build it with React Native because its Android support lacks behind that of iOS. Hi, I'm Linton Ye. I have built apps in both Android Native and React Native.
I also contribute to React Navigation, a new library that will soon become the default navigation system in React Native. I'll show you how to overcome some of the challenges when building a material design app on Android with React Native. I'll give you an overview of material design guidelines and dive into a few fundamental concepts, such as elevation and keylines. We'll build a folding action button from scratch using just built-in components in React Native.
I'll cover how to easily align UI elements to material grids, and provide tools that creates an immersive experience in the app. We'll put a lot of focus on material motion and implement a few engaging animations and interactions that can make your app stand out. I also present my general strategy of selecting component libraries that will save us from implementing everything from scratch. By the end of the course, you should have hands-on experience in building material user interfaces with React Native, and learn about the specific challenges and opportunities.
