- [Instructor] Before you can share your application with others, it will need to be packaged up so it can be installed on their device. Where Windows uses an MSI file to hold your packaged application, and Mac uses a DMG file, Android uses an APK file. An APK file is an archive file, like a zip file that contains all of the information needed to deliver an application to the Android platforms that meet the requirements defined in the manifest. Looking into the contents of the APK file, you will see classes and other code that is compiled into dex format, which is understood by the Android runtime in the classes.dex file and lib folder. Resource files and other pre-compiled resources in the res folder and resources.arsc file. Assets in the assets folder, and manifest information in the META-INF folder and AndroidManifest.xml file.
