- [Narrator] Before we actually perform a pilot light failover. I wanted to talk about read replicas. Read replicas as I mentioned in the previous video are read only copies of your RDS database. Typically read replicas are used to improve performance because what you can do is distribute your read queries across multiple database copies. And by distributing those queries you improve performance because you don't have one database copy that's handling the entire workload. But, as you'll see, as we go along throughout the remaining videos read replicates can also be used to improve availability, because if the master database fails you can promote a read replica; thereby allowing the workload to stay online.
