Learn about why you should take AWS Certification exams.
- [Instructor] So let's start with the most important question. Is AWS certification worth the effort that you're going to be putting in in order to have success? And in my opinion, absolutely yes. It's one of the reasons I'm making these courses. As a working Cloud architect, what I'm seeing in the market is AWS is dominating, and I'm working in the US, it's different in some places in the world. But where I work, there aren't enough trained AWS professionals for open jobs.
I simply can't hire enough people. And really it's one of the reasons that I'm making a number of courses here at LinkedIn Learning because I believe passionately that education is the way that we're going to prepare for the jobs of the future. So I mentioned that AWS is in a strong market position. How strong? Well as you can see by this reference, looking at the various sectors of if we look at for example public infrastructure as a service. Amazon's dominance is quite incredible. It's more than double in terms of market share as of quarter three 2016 in this source of the three major competitors combined.
Now again, it's a nuance market because there are other types of offerings. For example, in the second line, the platform as a service, you can see Amazon is dominant in terms of its relationship to the three largest competitors. But those competitors do have a significant market share. Now if we start thinking about AWS certifications, let's start at a high level. There are three types of certifications. There's an associate certification, a specialty certification, and a professional certification.
And a common question would be, well where do I start? And the most typical place would be where we are starting, at the associate level. So at the associate level, the idea is to demonstrate your AWS technical skills. And this is the first step towards being AWS certified. Specialty is validating your technical skills in key areas such as Big Data for example. Professional is showcasing advanced AWS technical expertise. Professional exams require a relevant associate certification so there's a path to it.
Associate first, professional second, and specialty may or may not be in the mix. This graphic from the Amazon certification website helps you understand the relationship between the different types of exams they currently offer. And you'll see that there are three broad categories, architecting, developing, and operations. And then two levels within each of the categories. Also there are currently two specialty certifications. So the one that we're targeting this cert prep course on is on the upper left which is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect at the associate level.
Notice there are corresponding exams at this level for developers and operations professionals. An important step in Amazon certification is to determine which exam you want to start preparing for. And with all things certification, a great first resource is Amazon's certification website which I'm showing here. You can see that if you scroll down on this website, they clearly show you the certifications under Our Certifications, preparatory steps they recommend under Prepare for Certification, benefits, so on and so forth.
So I'm going to click on Our Certifications. And you can see this is the information that I started this course with, the types of certifications, associates, specialty, and professional, and the roadmap. Now do be aware that certification is a very active area in Amazon and all the Cloud vendors, and by the time you watch this, there might be new or additional certifications or some of the core certifications might have updated or changed. So you always want to start by checking the Amazon.com certification website to see which certification is going to be the best fit for you.
And again, we'll be focusing on the one in the grid here in the upper left, the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate Certification in this course.
