What you should know

- [Instructor] So, what will you need to know to take this course? Since we are using Node.js, ideally if you have previous Node.js, JavaScript, or perhaps Java experience, that would be ideal. Additionally, familiarity with object-oriented concepts will also be a plus. If you aren't familiar with these topics I encourage you to learn about them from the many courses found in our library. Even if you only have a little familiarity with programming, you should still be able to follow along in this course. Exercise files are also provided for the course to help you as we go through coding stages. When we initially set up our project to begin coding, you will install some node modules which are dependencies for our skill. So keep in mind if you are starting from a point in the middle of the course, you will have to ensure this is set up. You also do not need a physical Amazon Echo device for the course. I will show you how to test our custom skill on some browser-based tools. If you do have a physical Echo device, I will also show you how you can run and test the skill on the device itself. Also, keep in mind that the majority of the interfaces you see in this course are web-based. That means that from the time this was recorded to the time when you see it, some of the UI elements may have changed. Explore the interface, as the core concepts remain the same. With those housekeeping rules out of the way, let's jump into understanding the Alexa ecosystem before we begin building our skill.
