The Storage Gateway

- [Instructor] One of the best ways to backup on-premises data to the Amazon cloud, is to create an AWS storage gateway. The storage gateway essentially bridges the gap between your on-premises environment and the cloud storage. Now, when you create an AWS cloud storage gateway you're going to have a choice of creating three different types of gateways. You can create a file gateway, a volume gateway or a tape gateway. So for the purposes of this course, we're going to be creating a tape gateway. That tape gateway essentially acts as a virtual tape appliance, and you can write your backups directly to that gateway. What happens is that your clients communicate directly with the gateway using all of the standard protocols that they would use to communicate with a physical tape-based device, and then the gateway caches that data locally, and then uploads it to the Amazon cloud.
