- [Instructor] In this video we will take a quick overview of the field of robotics. Consider contemporary definition of robotics before determining how robotics is an enabler of business value. Let's start by taking a quick look at where robotics has come from and where it is heading. If robotics are defined as machines that do work for humans, then the first robot might be the Egyptian water clock around 3000 BCE. However, defining robots as machines doing human work becomes difficult when we attempt to distinguish robots from tools. Thus the definition of machines doing human work is simply too broad. There is something distinctive about a robot and a tool that needs to be captured in the definition. Recently we have come to understand robots as reprogrammable machines. The most widely adopted software platform is the Robot Operating System, or ROS. ROS is an open source set of software libraries and tools helping creators program and build new robotic solutions.
