Rejected and undelivered messages in SES
- Amazon has to maintain a high reputation with the email partners that it delivers email to, so before they can even attempt to send your email on your behalf, Amazon will scan each of your outgoing emails for viruses and malware. Now, Amazon doesn't count these messages as bounces or complaints since no delivery attempt was actually made, but it does count them as rejects since they never left Amazon servers. Amazon doesn't have a simulator email address that we can use to simulate reject events, but they do provide us with an EICAR antivirus sample file. EICAR stands for the creator of this file, the European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, and this is a special file that looks like a virus to antivirus software, but when it's run, it doesn't actually do anything useful.
