- [Instructor] With cloud computing, your usage of cloud services is measured and you pay accordingly based on what you use. So this is a cloud computing characteristic, measured service, otherwise called metered usage. What this means is that the cloud service provider is tracking your usage of cloud services, whether that's service is cloud storage, virtual machines, application, containers, databases and so on. Now, in the case of things like virtual machines and databases, if those are not running, then you do not incur charges. Normally, you are charged by the second or by the minute for virtual machines that are running or databases that are running in the cloud, although often the costs are quoted on a per hour basis.
