Managing instance-based databases

- Up to this point, we've looked at managing the managed databases, or managed database systems in AWS. What I want to do now is talk about managing unmanaged database systems. Those instance-based databases. And there are really two things you have to think about now. You've got to manage the instance as an EC2 instance, just like you would any other EC2 instance. And you've got to manage the database management system. So part of this is done in the AWS console. And part of this is done within your instance operating system. And that's going to vary depending on the operating system you're running, right? We know our instance we've been looking at throughout this course is a Windows server running Microsoft SQL Server. So we know we're dealing with Windows. But if you're dealing with Linux, then you'll have to work with a Linux interface. And so it's very important to know you need to manage both of them.
