- NoSQL databases have really come on the scene in the past decade in a big way. The concept of these databases is to say that, you know what? Write performance may not be the most important thing. Maybe read performance is wildly important, or maybe ease of access is wildly important. See, here's the thing to keep in mind. When we first came up with the concepts of relational databases, we had slow processors, slow storage, a small amount of storage, and slow networks. So you put all those slows together, and you come up with, "Man, I really need to make this as fast as possible, "and I need to store it in as little space as possible." Now, we have tons of storage space, with very little cost, we have super fast processors, almost always under utilized, and we have at least good speed network connections, if not great.
