EC2 Spot Instances

- While on demand pricing for EC2 instances is a great choice for applications with unpredictable workloads, spot instances are a cost-effective choice if your applications are flexible about when they can run, and if they can be interrupted. A spot instance is an unused EC2 instance that is available for less than the on demand pricing. This allows you to significantly lower your Amazon EC2 costs. They use the same underlying hardware as on demand instances, and are best-suited for fault-tolerant, flexible workloads. This includes applications that perform data analysis, bat jobs, background processing, and optional tasks. To use spot instances, we start by creating a spot instance request, which includes the maximum price that we are willing to pay per hour hour per instance. It also includes other information such as target capacity, instance type, availability zone, security groups, key pair name, instance tags, et cetera.
