- In other episodes, we've talked about databases. We talked about flat file databases, relational databases, but what we haven't talked about now is how do we manage those? And that's what we're going to do at this point. We manage databases with a database management system and many people confuse the DBMS, the database management system with the database. They're not the same thing. A database management system manages databases as its name implies. The database is the thing behind the DBMS. The DBMS is the thing between the database and the users and administrators. So it gives us a way to get access to it. So think of it like you have of a user who wants to talk to a database for some reason, through any number of applications, it can be web based applications, Windows client applications, Linux client applications, iPhone or Android applications.
