Creating snapshots of EC2 virtual machines

- [Instructor] One of the most common methods for backing up an EC2 virtual machine instance is to create a snapshot. So let's take a look at how to do that. As you can see, I'm signed into the EC2 console and there are two virtual machine instances that are displayed. The top one is the EC2 instance that I want to back up. The bottom one, you'll notice has an instance state of terminated. In EC2 terminated is the same as deleted so this instance has actually been deleted already. Terminated instances simply continue to be shown within the console for a period of time. But one of the most important things that I wanted to show you is how these instances are identified. Every instance is identified primarily by an instance ID, which you can see right here. And we'll actually be referring to those instance IDs a bit in the next video.
