Take a look at AWS from the widest possible lens to take a first step toward the services of AWS.
- [Instructor] Even since it launched its first two computing products, EC2 and S3, Amazon has been the leader in the world of hosted computing platforms. 20 years ago, technologists pontificated about what we now call the cloud. However, none of them would've thought that a young web reseller would be the leader in a vast new technology field that required so much expertise and foresight. Also, 20 years ago, one of the largest costs for businesses was their IT expenditure.
Companies would spend millions of dollars on hardware, software, and people, and Amazon was no different. What made Amazon different was their ability to recognize their struggles and build the right tools to solve them. Amazon was in the business of leveraging technology to answer the problem of scale. The most obvious way technology can address issues of scale is by making knowledge free and open. Amazon was able to scale the booksellers market by building a virtual bookstore that could bring all bookstore into one location.
Eventually, Amazon was able to grow and face another question of scale. How does a large global organization scale technology operations globally? EC2 and S3 were the platforms that answered their internal scaling problems. Knowing that other companies would be facing the same hurdles, Amazon quickly built products from their solutions. Amazon was different because they understood the problems they faced and did the hard work of shifting them to valuable solutions. What problems did they face and what did they build? Amazon needed to connect with suppliers, distributors, and partners all over the world to bring to their shoppers an unrivaled catalog of options and experiences that could change the way they think about the consumer market.
To accomplish this ambitious goal, Amazon needed to embed connected digital computing into all parts of its global infrastructure, thus Amazon Web Services was born out of an internal business need no one else could provide. Understanding the obstacles to business is what separates highly successful ventures from those that struggle to thrive. Today all business communicates, markets, transacts, and grows through the use of digital technology. They handle contracts, bookkeeping, and HR through digital tools.
In other words, computing is at the heart of big and small business. The central claim all cloud platforms are going to make is, you are not in the business of technology. Let us unburden the work of technology from your business and allow you the opportunity to get back to doing what you do best, capturing and delivering high value instead of worrying about large sums of sunk costs. It is a compelling proposition. Throughout this course, we're going to review how Amazon delivers solutions, security, and services.
We will review what is needed to hire AWS as your trusted provider. If you are working in or running your own business, the value of your technology can be a terrible burden or a launching pad to incredible growth.
