Join Richard Harrington for an in-depth discussion in this video The use of auto adjustments to fix exposure and tone, part of After Effects Guru: Color Grading Footage.
…Inside of After Effects, there are three intelligent…auto effects to fix color, contrast, and levels.…You may find any of these individual ones or…a combination of them useful to quickly adjust your image.…This particular shot looks pretty good.…But as it pans around, there are slight changes in the exposure.…I've already added three different adjustments.…And here's the first one for auto levels.…Now, turning that on, very subtle adjustment.…But what important here is that it's smoothed out.…
You'll also see the ability to clip.…So if you want to punch your blacks, you can clip those.…Be careful not to go too far.…As well as clip the highlights.…Typically, I'll work with the default values…but increase the temporal smoothing so that…the image is analyzed over a couple of seconds as it creates its results.…So, here as the image pans, it does a…pretty good job of automatically evaluating the entire shot.…And making a levels adjustment based…on the surrounding two seconds of information.…
That's a nice subtle but quick adjustment.…
