Join Lee Lanier for an in-depth discussion in this video Using the exercise files, part of VFX Techniques: Space Scene 01: Maya Animation and Dynamic Simulation.
If you're a Premium Member of the lynda.com library you have access to all of the exercise files used throughout this course. These files can be found in the Exercise Files folder. Here's mine on my desktop, so let's take a look. There are three subfolders. The first is the MA files. These are all your Maya files. It's also the footage folder, this contains all of the rendered image sequences that you will eventually produce for this course. The third is the textures. There's a texture for a spaceship here and there are also two images for the earth and the moon.
The first images here are provided by NASA so we cannot actually include those as part of the exercise files folder. However, you can download those yourself and relink them inside Maya. Let me show you how to do that. The images are available through the NASA images website. Here it is right here. The images are numbered so you can actually search for these numbers like 727027. There's a search option over here on the right. And you can enter a number right here. 727027.
And then search. And there's the image. There are options for downloading this, and that's explained on this website. Once you download the images yourself for this one, of the Earth and the Moon, you can bring those back into Maya and hook them up. Let me show you how to do that. Here's Maya. This is 2014. I'm going to open up the first file that comes with the exercise files, MA files. Well, let's open up 1, 2. We're going to look in the hyper shade.
And go to the Textures tab. So, file 3 is actually that first one with the Earth 727027. Now, if it's missing, it'll just be black here, no icon. So you can browse for that image that you downloaded. There it is and then select it and reload it. Now, if the icon is still blank like this icon here, just double click and it should update. There's the first one.
Let's go to file 4 and that has the ship color. Now, there the icon is just missing, so I'll double click that. There's the ship. And let's see where the moon is. Here it is. It's file 1. Let's say it was missing, it was black right here, let's just go browse for that one and that one is 734971. Open up that and now we'll load. So you can do this for any Maya file where those two textures are missing. So it'd be good to download those, at the start of the project. If you don't have access to the exercise files you can still follow along with your own assets.
So, let's get started.
- Animating the spaceship and asteroid
- Animating cameras to follow the action
- Setting key and fill lights
- Creating layers for the sun, stars, and planet
- Setting up shadow and lighting layers
- Creating mental ray render passes
- Exploding geometry in a dynamic simulation
- Attaching nParticle emitter to bodies
- Batch rendering render layers
