Join Richard Harrington for an in-depth discussion in this video Using the Tritone effect in After Effects, part of Motion Graphics for Video Editors: Creating Backgrounds.
…If you find the colorama effect a bit unintuitive and it seems difficult to…understand the circular gradient map, there is another gradient map effect.…It's called tri-tone, but the thing is, it's not just three tones.…Let's disable this colorama effect and on that adjustment layer I'll add tri-tone.…In the effects and presets box I'll just type in tri-tone and…there it is under the color correction category.…The unusual thing about tri-tone is you don't have to limit yourself and…you can choose to map three colors.…
And remember you can actually reuse a color by simply selecting it twice.…In this case, by setting that layer to Hue, it's very subtle.…Color would be a bit more intense.…And I've mapped the highlights and…mid-tones to a really rich red and the shadows to a dark black.…But if you want even more control,…you can take advantage of an effect called CC Toner.…And this is from the side core collection that was rolled into After Effects.…Now it does have a tri-tone preset as well as…a duo-tone preset if you just want to use two colors.…
