Using Gradient Maps in Photoshop
While gradients on their own are useful, I absolutely love gradient maps. And this is essentially taking a gradient, and mapping its color values to other layers, based on luma values. So, certain colors match to different darknessses. The darker areas get this color from the gradient while the brighter areas get this color. It's essentially a map, and you take the gradient and map it to values based on the overall luminosity. Here's an example of that. Let's build this up from the ground up. I have a texture and a simple photo of a lighthouse. This photo of the lighthouse has been overlayed on top of the painted texture. And the painted texture was just that. We took paint to canvas, and then made a picture of it. But, of course, we can find many sources for these sorts of textures or use this one in your project.
