Join Richard Harrington for an in-depth discussion in this video Using the Black & White effect for contrast, part of After Effects Guru: Color Grading Footage.
…Another tweak I like to do to add selective contrast is…the use of an adjustment layer for the black and white effect.…By adding the black and white effect, I can…selectively convert parts of the image to black and white.…This allows me to influence the conversion using the color channel details.…For example, look at the blue slider here.…As I pull that down, look how the clouds come back.…Same thing by going after the cyan areas a bit.…What I've done there is really added some contrast back to the clouds that was lost.…
And those clouds are coming through much more nicely.…I can also adjust the red areas independently.…Once that's done, I'll set the adjustment layer to a luminosity blending mode.…And you see by being able to control these areas separately, you…can control tonality for each color zone, as well as the ability.…To manipulate some of the detail.…Look at how much of that sky was recovered by simply using the black…and white adjustment to bring out the contrast in the blue and cyan areas.…
Then, by using that luminosity mode, you can refine it.…
