Join Lee Lanier for an in-depth discussion in this video Test rendering mental ray render passes, part of VFX Techniques: Space Scene 01: Maya Animation and Dynamic Simulation.
…We have quite a few render layers now, and render passes.…Believe it or not, there's room for a few more.…But before I get to those, though, let's test our passes we have on the ship layer.…Now using mental ray render passes offers a unique opportunity…to use the layered psd format, or psd layered, same thing.…That allows you to place those passes on separate layers of…a single PSD file which you can look in Photoshop or…read with a program like Aftereffects. Let's give it a try.…With this layer interval, I'm going to open up…the render settings and make a few temporary changes.…
Just to test, I am going to change the animation extension so single frame.…I'm going to change the image format to psd layered.…And then temporarily reduce the resolution.…I'm going to go pretty small here.…640, just to speed up this process. That'll be 640 by 360.…Now I can do a batch render on a single frame…and this is probably the best way to test render passes.…So, Render >Batch Render, and open up the script editor so we can see the progress.…
