Join Lee Lanier for an in-depth discussion in this video Shattering the asteroid, part of VFX Techniques: Space Scene 01: Maya Animation and Dynamic Simulation.
…We have one last object to work with while preparing this scene.…And that's the asteroid.…Right now the asteroid spins into frame as the camera moves.…Then it disappears in frame 97. We decide that the asteroid blows up.…And the last place we see it is a whole piece, is frame 96.…We're going to need to render out the…asteroid intact like this, up to this point…and then we need to make some kind of version where it is broken up into chunks.…So we can simulate those chunks flying through the air.…One way to do that is to use the create shatter tool to break up…a copy of Let's give that a try. Let's go to the HyperGraph…and take a look at what we have so far. Right now the asteroid is 2 nodes.…
There's a group node for the animation and then geometry node below it.…To make a copy of this geometry right here, I'm going to…do this on frame 96 so the copy has the correct location.…So edit, duplicate.…I…want to pull this copy out of the hierarchy, you…can just unparent, or middle mouse drag in the hypergraph.…For now I'm going to hide the original asteroid, so we can work on the new one.…
