Join Lee Lanier for an in-depth discussion in this video Setting up a shadow layer, part of VFX Techniques: Space Scene 01 Maya Animation and Dynamic Simulation.
…We've created a custom render pass to produce specularity of the ship.…Let's move on and make another custom pass.…This time we're going to make a pass…that just renders out the shadows by themselves.…It's another common render pass.…And once again, there's more than one way to do this.…You can go through mental ray.…Mental ray provides a couple of default styles, or you can create your own.…In this case we're going to make our own.…So once again, I'm going to create a new light that…just serves a purpose of casting shadow for this new layer.…So I'm going to use the trick I did before.…
I'm just going to copy my Key Light.…So, I'm going to start my Key Light, there it is, and then go to Edit > Duplicate.…And, move this copy aside, so I can see it.…Rename this shad-light and go into the Hypergraph.…We're…going to select this new light and then Shift + select the ship node,…just the shift the node itself nothing else and then create a new layer.…I'll rename this new layer ship shad.…Turn off the render bowl for the other layers.…
