Resolution requirements for video

- When it comes to the resolution of an image in video, there's a lot of confusion. You'll hear people talk about DPI and PPI. DPI is dots per inch. This is typically used for print. And when we talk about dots per inch it's how many of the dots are inside of a printed inch. This is typically dealing with print technology and things like the fact that the printing press will resolve the quality of the image. However, when talking about computer graphics we often refer to pixels per inch. Again, this is a tenant for printing purposes. How many of those pixels are going to fit into a printed inch? The more you fit up to a certain point of maximum resolution that can be achieved by the printer, the generally higher quality the image appears. However, when we're talking about creating images or scanning or optimizing images for a video project, neither DPI or PPI really matters. Rather, we're talking about the total pixel dimensions.
