Join Mark Christiansen for an in-depth discussion in this video Reduce or remove grain with Neat Video, part of After Effects Compositing: 2 Matching Foreground to Background.
…If you ever find the need to degrain a…shot, you're better of going with the low cost…third party Neat Video plugin than trying it with…the built-in Remove Grain tool that's provided in After Effects.…Here's why, along with the quickest steps to get you started.…So here I've raised the exposure on this shot that's really a pretty tough one.…This was taken at dusk.…It's defocused.…And there's pretty prominent grain, which is typical in a low…light situation, regardless of the camera used to take the footage.…Some cameras will give more grain at low light,…others less, but they all will give some more grain.…
After Effects has a tool to deal with this.…So, under Noise and Grain, I can choose Remove Grain.…Now just as with the Match Grain tool, I do…have to set the viewing mode from Preview to Final Output.…And you can see that we don't have a quick instant fix here.…Even before I put this in motion, I don't really see, as remarkable a change.…Let's take a snapshot of the before.…And just compare it.…Now, I can improve on this.…
