Raw format overviews

- Let's talk about raw files. Now, specifically still images, although there are many raw video formats as well. The benefit of raw files, is infinite flexibility. Unlike a baked-in JPEG or TIFF file, you're gonna have tremendous latitude in adjusting things like exposure and noise, as well as recovering shadows and highlights. But the thing to realize is that raw is not really a file type, but rather a category. Most manufacturers use their own flavors of raw, so if I'm shooting on my Sony camera, it's an ARW file. On the other hand, Olympus it's an ORF. Nikon is the NEF, and you'll see a wide range of formats, CR2 for Canon for example. Each of these is gonna be specific to that camera, and typically there's slight variations, even amongst manufacturers, as cameras get newer. Well, this presents a few challenges.
